Gardening Gardeners Health and Safety Policy

Gardening Gardeners is committed to providing professional gardening services in a manner that protects the health, safety and welfare of our clients, the public, our employees and any contractors working with us. This policy sets out our approach to safe working practices, risk management and continual improvement in health and safety performance across all gardening and grounds maintenance activities.

Policy Aims and Responsibilities

Our aim is to prevent injury, ill health, damage to property and harm to the environment arising from our work. Health and safety is a core part of how we plan, deliver and review all gardening services, from routine maintenance through to larger landscaping projects.

Overall responsibility for health and safety rests with the company management, who ensure that adequate resources, training and supervision are provided. Supervisors are responsible for implementing this policy on site, carrying out checks and making sure that safe systems of work are followed. Every employee and contractor has a duty to take reasonable care of their own health and safety and that of others who may be affected by their actions, and to cooperate fully with all health and safety measures.

Risk Assessment and Planning

Before work begins, appropriate risk assessments are carried out to identify potential hazards associated with gardening tasks, tools, machinery, access, weather, and the surrounding environment. These assessments guide the selection of control measures, personal protective equipment and the sequence of work.

We take into account the specific nature of the property and garden, including slopes, water features, overhead services, nearby roads or paths, and the presence of residents, visitors or members of the public. Work is planned to minimise risks, with particular care taken where there may be vulnerable people, such as children, older people or pets, in or near the garden.

Safe Use of Tools and Machinery

All tools and machinery used by Gardening Gardeners are selected, maintained and operated in line with manufacturer guidance and relevant regulations. Equipment is regularly inspected for damage or faults, and any defective items are removed from service until repaired or replaced.

Only trained and authorised personnel are permitted to operate powered equipment such as mowers, strimmers, hedge trimmers, blowers, chainsaws and other specialised machinery. Guards, safety devices and emergency stops must never be bypassed or removed. Fuel, oils and batteries are handled and stored safely to reduce the risk of fire, spills or contamination.

Personal Protective Equipment

Suitable personal protective equipment is provided and its use is mandatory where required by risk assessments. This may include safety footwear, gloves, eye and face protection, hearing protection, high visibility clothing, helmets and respiratory protection where necessary.

Staff are trained in the correct use, care and limitations of personal protective equipment. All items are inspected regularly and replaced when worn or damaged to ensure continued protection.

Manual Handling and Physical Wellbeing

Gardening work can be physically demanding. To reduce the risk of injury, tasks involving lifting, carrying, pushing or pulling are assessed and, where possible, mechanical aids or alternative methods are used. Staff receive guidance on safe lifting techniques and on pacing work to prevent overexertion.

We encourage our team to take appropriate breaks, remain hydrated and work in a way that recognises the physical nature of gardening. Any pain, strain or discomfort is reported promptly so that adjustments can be made and injuries prevented from worsening.

Chemicals, Fertilisers and Environmental Protection

When using products such as fertilisers, soil improvers, weed control substances or other garden treatments, we follow manufacturer instructions and applicable safety requirements. Only trained personnel may handle and apply such products, and they do so using appropriate personal protective equipment and application methods.

Chemicals are stored securely and transported safely to prevent leaks, spills or unauthorised access. We aim to minimise environmental impact by using products responsibly, avoiding unnecessary treatments and preventing contamination of soil, water features and neighbouring properties.

Site Safety and Public Protection

We work carefully to protect clients, visitors and the wider public during gardening activities. Where necessary, we establish safe working zones, use barriers or signage, and plan access routes to keep people away from hazardous areas, moving machinery or overhead operations.

Tools and materials are kept tidy and stored safely during work, especially on paths, driveways and entrances. At the end of each visit, all equipment is removed or safely secured, and the work area is left in a condition that does not present risks of trips, slips or other accidents.

Weather, Outdoor Conditions and Seasonal Risks

Outdoor work is affected by changing weather and seasonal conditions. We monitor conditions and adjust or suspend work when necessary, for example during high winds, electrical storms, extreme temperatures or when surfaces are too slippery or unstable.

Appropriate clothing and sun protection are used to manage exposure to heat and sunlight, while rain, cold and wind are taken into account when planning schedules and choosing suitable methods of work.

Training, Communication and Supervision

All staff receive induction training in this Health and Safety Policy and in the specific safe systems of work relevant to their role. Additional instruction and refresher training are provided as equipment, methods or legal requirements change.

Supervisors monitor working practices and provide guidance and feedback to maintain safe standards. Staff are encouraged to raise concerns, suggest improvements and report hazards or near misses so that corrective action can be taken.

Incident Reporting and Continuous Improvement

All accidents, injuries, near misses and hazardous situations are reported and recorded in line with our procedures. We investigate incidents to identify root causes and implement measures to prevent recurrence.

This Health and Safety Policy is reviewed periodically and whenever there are significant changes in our activities, equipment or legal obligations. Lessons learned from experience, feedback from staff and clients, and developments in best practice are used to strengthen our approach to health and safety across our gardening services.
